Safe Walking for Kids

GG        Are you walking to school together every morning, Rei and Lin?

Rei Lin Yes, we are good friends.

GG        It’s both a scary and exciting milestone that you both start walking to school alone.  Some children are less attentive and more impulsive. Some intersections are very difficult to cross safely, while others are benign and have crossing guards.

Barba   Rei, what do you need to know to be safe?

Rei        We cross only at intersections.  And we watch and wait for the light to change colors at intersections.  We look right, left, and again right before stepping into the street.

Barba   Bingo!  Regardless if the light is green, yes.  You are very good.

GG        It’s also crucial to estimate the speed of an oncoming car when you judge whether you can cross now.  Be careful that while you may have the right of way, you can’t assume that cars can see or notice you.

Lin        When we see a car coming, just wait for the car to stop before we are crossing.

Barba   You got it!  Holding hands makes sure you don’t run off and you can cross the road safely together.  And you need to be aware of cars suddenly coming out of alleys or making turns.  For that, you should walk instead of run and move in predictable ways so that drivers can anticipate your direction.

GG        Always cross in a place you can see the traffic coming from all directions. Parked cars make it hard to see clearly, so only ever cross between them if there is absolutely no other option. Stand on the kerb to show drivers you want to cross, and wait for the traffic to stop

Barba   Every time you cross the road, even if you cross at a crossing, remember to stop, look and listen. Only cross when you are absolutely sure it is safe.

GG        According to a recent analysis, children are most likely to be the victim of abduction when they are walking to and from school or school-related events.  Among the reported trends:38 percent of attempted abductions occurred while a child was walking to or from school, riding a school bus or riding a bicycle, 43 percent involved children ages 10 through 14, and 72 percent of attempted abduction victims were female.

Rei        Oh my boy! That’s really scary.

Barba   When a missing child makes the news, every parent has the same thought flash through their mind: what if that was my child?  Unbearable thoughts. This is a good reminder that we should all talk to our kittens about street safety rules.

GG        Oh yes!  Rei and Lin, there is a rhyme you should chant in your heads.  Say “I won’t go with someone I don’t know”.

Rei Lin I won’t go with someone I don’t know.

GG        Practice saying it out loud.  It’s not your job to think, judge and assess if a person looks like a nice person or a bad person. Just follow this safety rule.

Barba   If an adult asks for help, go get another adult to help them.  That means that even if they are old and have a cast or crutches and need help carrying their groceries to their car.

GG        Always keep two steps back from a car.  If a car slows down and asks for directions, take TWO STEPS back from the car. You can give driving directions from the sidewalk.  NEVER get into a car for any reason.  Even if it’s cold or rainy and they can drive you a few blocks home.

Barba   Abductors are also cowards and even if they threaten you, they will not chase you if you are running through a parking lot or screaming.  If they touch you, make a scene and shout at the top of your lungs.

GG        Scream, yell, kick and run.
